There is chaos behind the mask.
The monkey is my zodiac animal, so I have a lot of monkeys in my art. The sketch was originally done as a mini sketch series I was doing on sad space astronauts.
In 2017, I wanted to create a logo for myself that would represent me everywhere. Just like I originally thought, the process of creating one simple image that would become an extension of myself would prove very difficult. However after creating a sticker design for, The Room illustration; I felt like that mask image really stuck with me. I ended up simplifying the image and using it as my main logo design. This one was dedicated to Stephen Hillenburg and Spongebob after hearing that the creator being diagnosed with ALS. Spongebob was one of my favorite childhood characters so hearing the news was like a punch to the gut. This illustration is sale as a PRINT at 20% of all purchases goes to the ALS Association.
I usually don't do this, but this illustration was a direct sequel to one before it, The Year of the Rooster. The masked monkey kid has taken out the rest of his 11 zodiac classmates with a pointy stick.
The start of 2017 was a rough that was fill with turmoil. In the Chinese zodiac, 2017 fell on the year of the rooster, so the goal was to show a rooster that was down on its luck. The idea of kids wearing animal masks playing four square was a sudden sporadic idea I had in bed.
An illustration that embodies all the fears of a new year and the inability to better oneself. Incorporating inspiration from Medusa, Greek or Roman pillars, Lady justice and human head planters.
